These guidelines are far from complete, and should only be used as starting points for further reading.
Nearly all of the links out of this node are to MediaWiki or Wikipedia pages.
Content Guidelines
- A node is a single topic
- The title of the node should be the name of the topic
- The content of the node must stay on-topic, material for a different topic should be linked to in another node
- Nodes are cheap, spread your information out among
multiple nodes
- This makes it easier to follow different paths of discussion
- You don't have to try to force all of your information into a linear sequence
- Don't use subdirectories unless you have to
- Node names should be descriptive, so you should not have a situation where you want two sets of information to have the same node name
- Subdirectories make locating nodes (without linking) more difficult
- Always embed your links in a sentence to give them context
- Information and links about the current node
(not associated with content in the node) should
be placed at the top of the node text, indented and
emphasized like this example:
:''See also [[this node]]''
- Links should be made in the following precedence
order:
- Wikilink to node of interest
- Interwiki link to:
- Other project's node of interest
- Script interwiki for users/projects
- External wiki materials
- External, full URL to content
Layout Guidelines
- The Wikipedia project has an excellent selection of style guidelines
- Wiki Markup Examples are given to help editing of nodes
- Put node-context links at the bottom of the node,
below a horizontal rule (----), to separate it
from the body of the node. Use pipe characters
(|) to separate links.
- For example, link to material of similar topics or parent nodes. This node has such links at the bottom.
- Use citation within nodes to refer to external material
Tools to help editing wiki pages
- Converting from Word to MediaWiki (Note: it is recommended to just copy-paste paragraphs in and then apply wiki formatting)
