Project Overview

The deposition of cigarette carcinogens in human lungs has been suggested as a factor likely associated with lung cancer. Cigarette smoking machines can be used to induce particle deposition in human lung casts. The objective of this project was to design and build a cigarette smoking machine and to develop hardware and software interfaces between the smoking machine and human lung casts. The basic smoking machine consists of a vacuum pump that pulls smoke through a cigarette and a series of flow meters and valves at a specified intervals. The interface to be developed between the smoking machine and lung cast accurately reproduces smoking patterns and air flow through a lung cast containing up to 10 airway generations. A key requirement for this project was that the smoking machine must comply with standardized smoking protocols.

Design Team

Machine Team: Key issues to be addressed by this team include system design and construction, design requirements for computer interface and development of a solution for connecting the lung cast to the smoking machine.

Lung Team: This team is responsible for determination of best methods for producing accurate lung casts, development of a solution for connecting the lung cast to the smoking machine and develop solutions for cleaning out the lung cast after each test.
