Project Summary
The unavailability of clean drinkable water in developing countries hinders the progress of communities and decreases their quality of living. Coastal communities in developing countries such as Peru have the ocean as a great potential source of water, but lack the resources to convert it into consumable, potable water.
During the early stages of this project, a lot of research was conducted to find a feasible solution to the current global water scarcity problem. To do this, three main facts drove the research, conceptualization and design of this PRP:
- Drinking water is currently a globally scarce resource
- 97% of the existing water in the world is salt water, which is a significant resource clean, drinkable water.
- Fifty percent of the populations in developing countries are exposed to polluted water sources.
At last, a solution was conceptualized: A solar distiller. This distiller operates with three main processes: Wicking, evaporation and condensation. Wicking is meant to allow a faster evaporation of the salty/contaminated water through a vertical wick. Evaporation and Condensation will use solar energy for power.
The team in charge consists of three mechanical engineers and an industrial and systems engineer. The project approached from a mechanical standpoint and a sustainable standpoint. Two of the mechanical engineers will focus on the mechanical approach, which involves mechanics, design of machine elements and fluids concepts. The third mechanical engineer and the industrial and systems engineer will focus on the sustainable, cultural, high level abstraction and implementation aspects of the project.

Multidisciplinary Senior Design I
As in February of 2008, This is the final Design for our solar powered water desalination device, also referred as our Water Distiller. The picture does not include final measurements. But it has a length of 76", a width of 45" and height of 26" and an angle (between the inclined glass and the base) of 50 degrees.
The documents during MDSD I, such as the concept and detailed designed presentations are located at this bottom of this page, under "Published Documents"

- Design Changes along MDSD II
While building the final prototype, different types of materials were purchased, tried, and changed during the process. This means that our bill of materials was constantly changing, but without affecting the original design or concept of the device.

Published Documents
As you conclude the project, include links to all of your finished and fully polished documents here. The previous sections of the web site contain the entire design history of your project. This section contains the finished products. Add more links as needed.
Note that to open the files with a .ppt extension, click them and save them on the desktop with a .pps extension first, to see them as a presentation. Then open then from the desktop. Otherwise the file will intend to open in Microsoft Word and it will not work properly.
