Weeks 1-2 and/or 1-3:

Three Week Project Plan
Person Week 0->1 Tasks

(3 Dec 07)

Week 1->2 Tasks

(10 Dec 07)

Week 2->3 Tasks

(17 Dec 07)

ME Student 1 Review EDGE website, set up a group meeting with Eula Dozier for Friday. Facilitate discussion based on different methods for installation of tile floors, and problems associated with each. Memorize team members names, and begin to distinguish team mates areas of strengths and weaknesses. Observe the Team Dynamics Training Session, and take mental notes on who displays which characteristics. Familiarize self with CAD software that will best fit skills and needs of group. Work through a tutorial to learn program, and create a rough assembly of a standard wet-saw as a practice of learned skills. Develop week 4 WBS, thoroughly review previous weeks research. Begin to follow up on the speed-cost analysis that the CE and EE are doing, review the information they've collected and keep them focused on the big picture. Discuss the support and strength needs with the ME and ISE's. Make sure that there experiments were thorough, and discuss implications on design.
ME Student 2 Review EDGE website, research topic online. Use the prototype on test stand, and benchmark its strengths and weaknesses, and the time it takes to mark a length of tile. Also practice marking with more traditional means as a comparison. Bring back comments on at least 2 installation videos, DIY guides, or preferably a novel/uncommon tile cutting techniques. Comments for both vinyl and ceramic tile techniques. Research differences in linear actuators, exploring the differences in speeds and accuracy. Work with CE/EE to determine how fast the programming will be able to control actuators. Find various vendors, and establish contact with sales person to get their feedback on our needs as well. Familiarize self with CAD software. Work through a tutorial to learn program, and create a rough assembly of a potential set up of our actuators as a practice of learned skills.
ME Student 3 Same as ME 2 Research differences in different cutting tools, and gather specifications on routers and rotary cutters. Verify that a cheap router will still perform the same basic function as more expensive commercial version. Experiment with cutting vinyl tile, max unsupported length of the tile. Get a feel for the amount the tile resists cutting/tenancy of tile to move. Attempt to quantify if possible. Familiarize self with CAD software. Work through a tutorial to learn program, and create a rough assembly of the supports for the bottom of the tile in a basic vice as practice of learned skills. Brainstorm with ME4 to come up with different ideas.
ME Student 4 Same as ME 2 Research the rewards and costs of a printer-style cutter. Explore concept of a one-axis cutter, with a constant tile feed. Discuss coding/controls implementations with CE and a CE professor. Summarize findings for group meeting on Friday. Experiment with cutting vinyl tile, find optimum range of rotary speed and linear feed rate of the tile. Evaluate based on cleanness of cut, smoothness of edges, and other characteristics as seen fit. Familiarize self with CAD software. Work through a tutorial to learn program, and create a rough assembly a basic vice set up as practice of learned skills. Vise should have a different fundamental design then ME3.
ISE Student 1 Same as ME 2 Investigate alternatives to linear actuators. Explore the risks and benefits of a lead screw system. Also investigate the purchase of a pre-fabricated CNC, gather technical specs and data on existing solutions. Develop spreadsheet of pros and cons of different options. Develop relationship with local tile installers, and arrange for a site visit. Perform comparative benchmark/time study on tile cutting and laying at an actual installation site if possible. May need to go to "The Tile Shops" open classes on Saturday morning at 9am.
EE Student 1 Same as ME 2 Work with CE to research the different options for the controls of the linear actuators, exploring the differences in speeds and accuracy versus price. Identify various vendors, and what our range of specs will be for the control system. Focus on the Continue research into our specifications and requirements for controls system. Also start looking into the power load's/differences in cutting tools and routers.
CE Student 1 Same as ME 2 Work with EE to research the different options for the controls of the linear actuators, exploring the differences in speeds and accuracy versus price. Identify various vendors, and what our range of specs will be for the control system. Continue research into our specifications and requirements for controls system. Explore what coding language will best suit our needs, and work best with the control system. Talk with CE professors to get their opinions of needs for control system.
