This project is to develop a stimulating video game based tool to rehabilitate patients with varying disabilities. The primary focus will be on wheel chair bound patients, but could also help other patients as well. It will rehabilitate basic sitting tasks recongize movements by use of center-of-pressure controlled gaming options. The device specifically can be used for patients with multiple schlerosis(MS), lower extremity amputation, or any patient confined to a wheel chair. The ultimate goal of this project as with all other Assistive Device projects, is to apply technology to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, and the development of technologies related to the broad field of bioengineering. In addition, the projects serve as real life product design applications that enhance the education of the student team. As part of the Assistive Devices roadmap, described in detail below this project will act as a basis for continued development by providing a video game training enabling technolgy. Building off of the hand-held version P09003, this concept could be applied to other assistive devices and used to rehabilitate other areas. Also a variety of stimulating games could be developed by lower levels of difficulty engineering minds on the road map. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation To be used by patients of all ages at the Nazareth Physical Therapy Teaching Clinic For more information see this Marketing Video (open in power point) |
