Project Information - P06210

Project Name: P06210
Project Description: Seizure monitor
Project track: Assistive Devices
DPM (Planning) term:
SD1 (Starting) term: 2005-2
SD2 (Ending) term: 2005-3
Description: A number of local children with epilepsy have suffocated during nighttime seizures when nobody knew what was happening in time to stop them. The parents of a local teenager with epilepsy have been struggling to find a way to make sure they are alerted if their child has a seizure while sleeping, and have approached RIT to design a solution. Laser-based motion detectors are viewed as unreliable because the child may not move enough to trip the sensor. The parents would like a device that could detect the rhythmic motion their child exhibits during a seizure and set off an audible alarm to alert the night nurse or wake the parents themselves. Students will learn about human body motion during seizures and apply basic vibration analysis and use electrical sensors to detect particular human body movements.
