Assistive Device Family Information
Useful Information
- To use the Edge e-mail option to send mail to your entire team or another Assistive Device Track team, you can use the Bulk Email link. Just select the team number from the pull-down menu and choose access level "Editor", since all student team members have been given Editor privileges on their team's websites.
- To see projects done at other schools under this program, you can visit the Homepage for the NSF Devices for People with Disabilities Program. Your project background research should start here to see if other similar devices have been constructed elsewhere.
- For direct links to projects done at RIT under this program, go to the SDAPD Home.
- All assistive device teams have some additional
requirements. Each team must:
- Have each team member sign the additional personnel form on the first day of Senior Design (available from Dr. DeBartolo)
- Maintain all budget and purchase information online or in hardcopy to be presented to your advisor no less often than weekly once purchasing begins.
- Submit a 2-page project summary at the end of the year. These summaries will be archived on the NSF Devices for People with Diabilities Homepage.
Downloads
These downloads may be helpful to you as you work on your projects:- Budget Worksheet - please name the file to make it easy to distinguish between teams, e.g. "P0800#_budget.xls"
- Sample 2-page Summaries - At the end of MSD II, each NSF-sponsored team is required to submit a 2-page project summary that will be used to publicize this family of projects. This is a sample of a prior RIT report. Please name the file to make it easy to distinguish between teams, e.g. "P0800#_2-page_summary.doc"
Design Competitions
Students interested in these design projects should consider entering the following design competitions. NSF has provided some travel funds for students attending the conferences to present papers.
- Rehabilitation Engineering Research center on Accessible Medical Instrumentation: National Student Design Competition
- NISH: National Scholar Award for Workplace Innovation and Design (A 2004-05 RIT Senior Design Team received an honorable mention in this contest)
- Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America: Student Design Competition (click on "Call for Participation" or "Student Design Competition" for information)
