Project OverviewThis project will first re-design and improve the horizontal rocket engine test stand that was developed by team P06006. Based on this experience, it will continue with the design and development of a vertical rocket stage test stand. These test stands will be used by teams P07105, P07106 and P07109.

Principle Sponsor or Sponsoring OrganizationProject METEOR is being sponsored through the Electrical Engineering Department, at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The project has also received a donation from Harris RF Corporation.
Detailed DescriptionThis project will first re-design and improve the horizontal rocket engine test stand that was developed by team P06006. Based on this experience, it will continue with the design and development of a vertical rocket stage test stand. These test stands will be used by teams P07105, P07106 and P07109.
The team will:
- Participate in the first steel rocket engine tests in December.
- Contribute to the upgrades of the horizontal test stand.
- Develop several alternative concepts for the vertical test stand.
- Down select one concept. The selection process should be synchronized with team P07109, who designs the flying rocket stage, i.e. the Device To Test.
- Continue with detailed design which implies:
- Structural and thermal, paper and pencil and FEA analysis.
- Data Acquisition System design and debugging
The latter two will most probably require several iterative steps.
- Manufacture and assemble the vertical test stand.
- Participate in all rocket ground tests.
Customer NeedsThe primary need of the customer is a robust vertical test stand.

Customer and Sponsor InvolvementThe team is expected to carry out the vast majority of their interactions with the Team Guide, Dr. Kozak. Dr. Patru will act as the customer on behalf of Project METEOR. He will meet weekly with the project manager and on a per need bases with the entire team.
The project has a significant research component and therefore the Guide and the consultants will be involved in the R&D effort of this project.
- The design shall comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. The team's design project report should include references to, and compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- The design shall comply with all applicable RIT Policies and Procedures. The team's design project report should include references to, and compliance with all applicable RIT Policies and Procedures.
- Wherever practical, the design should follow industry standard codes and standards. The team's design project report should include references to, and compliance with appropriate industry codes or standards.
- Specific Regulatory considerations (i.e. UL, IEEE, FDA, FCC, RIT)
- RIT Risk Management Office. Dr. Patru will take care of all necessary waivers and approvals. However, the team is responsible to notify the latter of such needs in a timely fashion. Note that the review process can take between four and ten weeks!!!
Project Budget and Special Procurement Processes
The Project has a budget of $ 10K, BUT ALL expenditures have to be reviewed and approved by Dr. Patru. The team is expected to generate an estimated budget by the time of the Concept Review, i.e. sixth week of school. This budget has been set to encourage the team to focus on quality. However, the team is expected to be creative and come up with the least expensive solutions which still meet the design specifications.
Intellectual Property ConsiderationsEverything associated with this project is public domain.
Engineering SpecificationsThe vertical test stand will have to capable to test the flying rocket stage being developed by teams P07106 and P07109. This team is expected to interact with the former teams and develop the design specifications based on their test requirements.
Safety ConstraintsTesting will be performed exclusively within the concrete block house, following the latest version of the Test Site Manual. All team members are required to read and know the testing methodology and protocol.
Course DeliverablesThe following requirements complement or repeat the deliverables in the Course Deliverables Document. At the end of the project, the team is expected to deliver to the customer the following documents and materials:
1.List of Documentation Deliverables
- Computer generated mechanical 3D and 2D drawings, with necessary and sufficient text description, analysis and comments so that subsequently a person new to the project can understand, use and build a similar rocket engine.
- Complete, i.e. updated, schematic(s), printed circuit board layout(s) and hardware description language code with the necessary and sufficient text description and comments so that subsequently a person new to the project can understand, use and build the same subsystems again.
- Software, well commented and documented.
- Simulation input and output files, with necessary and sufficient text description, analysis and comments so that subsequently a person new to the project can understand and use these results.
- All electronic files on a CD.
- A vertical test stand assembly and user manual.
- Each team member is expected to record all work, throughout the quarter, in a personal bonded notebook. These will be left in the METEOR lab at the end of SDI and SDII. If a team member wants to keep his/her notebook, a scanned and printed copy is required instead.
- Any relevant external documentation should be printed, and kept in a three hole folder throughout the project duration. All this documentation will be placed in one large team folder at the end of SDII.
- Partial documentation deliverables are to be printed and placed in a team technical folder, which will reside in the METEOR lab.

Grading and Assessment SchemeBased on several criteria, as will be explained in the first lecture of the Senior Design class, a team grade is assigned. Individual grades are then adjusted, usually equal to, or +/- one letter grade.
