Establish Target Specifications

Specification Development Process

To develop the target specifications, the team created metrics based on the customer needs. These metrics are quantitative, measurable values. The metrics and units were developed, and then the marginal and target values were set by the team based on information gathered by competitive benchmarking of similar devices. The specifications were then further refined into four groups: Specifications, Design Guidelines, Constraints, and Must-Haves. All of these items were considered in the design process.

A list of these Engineering Specifications may be found here (Open in Excel).

The team then performed a QFD analysis on the needs and specifications, mapping the engineering specifications to each customer need. Correlation values of 1, 3, and 9 were used to represent how closely the spec addresses each need.

This matrix and associated pareto analysis can be found here (Open in Excel).
