Alternative Energy Information

The RIT campus uses three different types of energy sources. Energy is consumed, created and utilized from waste sources. This concept of alternative energy sources will focus on the creation of energy. It was agreed within the group that wind energy would be an interesting route to take. However, this concept will not be limited to wind energy. Other concepts will be review to see which alternative energy will be best suited for the RIT campus.

Expected Project Benefits

The benefits of this project will be mainly environmentally focused. A form of clean energy will be the product while reducing the amount of greenhouse emissions. Although the energy produced will not be a significant amount, this concept will help boost the image of the institution instantly.


Assumptions and Constraints

  1. Locations (Constrained by wetlands and other ecosystems)
  2. Zoning laws will not be an issue on campus
  3. Look at small scale (single turbine) rather than wind farm
  4. Look into alternative energy sources
  5. Will not focus on Bio-diesel and photo voltaic since concepts are already dedicated

VAWT comparison This document provides the comparison between the vertical and horizontal turbines.
Wind Benchmarking This is an excel worksheet. It provides information for few different types of turbines ranging from 50kW to 1,500kW.
Wind Turbine Morphological Analysis This is a Microsoft Visio file that provides a morphological Analysis. This document keeps in mind things such as number of blades in a turbine, the possible storage of energy and the type of turbine power.
