Step 2. Collect Competitive Benchmarking Information

Relatively few Sr. design projects start from a clean sheet of paper. In most cases, there are some baseline solutions or products that could meet the vast majority of the customer's needs.

Write one or two paragraphs about each benchmark solution from the market place. Include a picture of the product, preferably illustrating the product in use or operation.

This device is considered the optimal design in terms of hardware and software specifications. This product lies within the upper spectrum of products in its class. Its base cost $7,995.00

This product meets a lot of the customer needs, but lacks in areas such as battery life and screen size. This product falls into the middle of the spectrum when compared to other families of communication boards. Its base cost is $3,390

This product was what last year's senior design team developed and constructed. This device, when compared to the other two would be in the bottom of the product spectrum. Meeting a variety of the customer's needs, it failed to meet some key requirements in terms of size, weight, software, and a custom enclosure. This products cost is under $1200.00

These three products will be used to develop ideas and designs for an end product that will meet all of the customer's functional specifications.

Step 3. Set Ideal and Marginally Acceptable Target Values

Given the customer needs, awareness of the marketplace, and resource limitations of the current project, assign preliminary engineering specifications on each of the metrics. In addition to setting the nominal or target value or each specification, provide guidance to the team on the ideal value or direction that the team should strive for, once the nominal target values have been realized.
