Project Overview

The ARC of Monroe County has requested a communication board for one of its consumers who has speech and spelling capabilities. This would replace a paper-based communication book.

A prototype solution was implemented during the 2006/2007 academic year that demonstrated the fundamental operation of a battery powered, touch screen, LCD display based device, using a standard PC/104 computing platform. It ran a Linux operating system that was placed in a slightly modified standard flat-panel enclosure, along with a suggested custom enclosure design.

Based on feedback from the customer, the prototype needs to be refined to more closely meet the actual customer requirements in terms of size, weight, durability and operational characteristics. In short, the computing platform and software solutions need to be reconsidered so as to more closely match the necessary requirements of the customer. The overall enclosure needs to be reconsidered and actually implemented so that the unit can be more thoroughly evaluated by the end users.
