Project DescriptionIn the United States, 98% of carbon dioxide is emitted as the result of the combustion of fossil fuels. Consequently, carbon dioxide emissions and energy use are highly correlated. This Senior Design Project will follow precedence of the RIT's Green Master Plan initiated by Honors Greening of RIT (Spring 2003-2004) and continue moving forward with greening RIT Campus.
The long term objective of this family of projects is to decrease the RIT gross energy consumption (from greenhouse gas producing sources) per FTE student by 10% from the 2005 baseline rate by the conclusion of calendar year 2013. As a first step towards this long term objective, the mission of this project team is to develop an initial plan whereby Senior Design Students in the KGCOE can contribute to the development of RIT as a campus that is environmentally sustainable and energy efficient.
The objective of P08424 is to find a way to reduce electricity usage on the residential side of campus in a measurable way. The mission of this student team is to investigate energy consumption of residential buildings on RIT Campus and discover opportunity of energy conservation, which will engage improvements on energy systems operation practice, software logistics control, and energy system modifications. There need to be a movement toward student involvement as part of the energy savings practices on campus.
This team will develop an audit to identify equipment such as lighting or computers along with student behavior patterns that contribute to high energy use. From the results of this audit, students will make recommendations for energy conservation. A solution should include an engineering solution in the form of a small capital improvement or system modification that can be implemented during senior design II. It will also include a component to educate the student body about their energy consumption and responsibility to reducing this consumption.
