Key Goals

  1. Develop a clean, sustainable, and complete lighting system for use in developing nations
  2. Develop a method for "harvesting" energy from available sources
  3. Develop a rugged and robust casing/construction for the system
  4. Develop a long life, high capacity storage system for times when energy source is unavailable
  5. Develop a light emitter which uses little power and provides lots of evenly distributed light
  6. Develop a product which is inexpensive to produce and purchase
  7. Develop a product that does not reinvent the basic components to be used but rather comes up with a new way of having them all work together
  8. Develop a product that can withstand the climatic conditions to which it may be exposed

  1. Develop a clean, sustainable, and complete lighting system for use in developing nations
    1. Develop a method for "harvesting" energy from available sources
      1. Determine what the available sources are
      2. Research the potential methods for collecting energy from the available sources
      3. Select an appropriate method for collecting energy
      4. Determine how the collection method should/will interface with other components
      5. Integrate collection system with other components
    2. Develop a rugged and robust casing/construction for the system
      1. Determine the environmental and physical demands of the product
      2. Source materials which could be used
      3. Based on material performance and cost evaluate each of the options
      4. Select an appropriate material or set of materials for the product
      5. With the end use of the product in mind, design concepts for the outer casing
      6. Based on utility, aesthetics, integrability with other components, and performance in durability testing, select a design for the exterior
      7. Produce the casing and assemble it with the rest of the components
    3. Develop a long life, high capacity storage system for times when energy source is unavailable
      1. Determine the necessary power storage needs of the product
      2. Research the various power storage methods
      3. Rank the power storage methods based on capacity, cost, and life-time
      4. Select an appropriate power storage method
      5. Integrate that storage method into the product
    4. Develop a light emitter which uses little power and provides lots of evenly distributed light
      1. Determine the potential light sources
      2. Determine how to meet the lighting requirements
      3. Based on energy consumption, cost, and lifetime, rank the identified lighting sources
      4. Select an appropriate lighting system
      5. Determine how to best emit the light
      6. Design the light emitter
      7. Integrate the light emitter with the rest of the lighting system
    5. Develop a product which is inexpensive to produce and purchase
      1. Throughout the design process, determine the quality v. cost of the components used - don't be extravagant, but keep in mind that the system must be made to last
      2. Throughout the design process, keep the production process in mind and keep the product in the realm of "easy to manufacture"
      3. Remember that environmental concerns are also to be considered - The product must be sustainable and should, if possible, be designed for an environmentally and economically friendly end of life
    6. Develop a product that does not reinvent the basic components to be used but rather comes up with a new way of having them all work together
      1. Use common-off-the-shelf components whenever possible
      2. Only create a new component when necessary
