Generate Product Concepts

We took the following steps to obtain product concepts

Step 1. Clarify The Problem

The customer has a need for an LED lighting system.

We broke that problem down into 5 discrete areas:

  1. System must accept and/or store external energy
  2. System must have some sort of activation sensor
  3. System must convert the external energy to our needed electrical type
  4. System must apply the converted energy to the LEDs
  5. System must disperse the light energy to our target area.

We carried out a brainstorming session to produce ideas for solving the problem areas. The results of this session are shown below.

Step 4. Explore Systematically

Following our external and internal searches, we narrowed down the list of concepts to the following:

Solutions to Subproblem of converting energy to desired electrical type

Solutions to Subproblem of Applying Electrical Energy

Solutions to Subproblem of Dispersing Light Energy

Solutions to Subproblem of Storing/accepting external energy

Solutions to Activation sensor Subproblem

Step 5. Reflect on the Results and the Process

After generating many concepts, we narrowed our focus to a replacement LED lighting system that encompases directional placement LEDs, used the current fixture, had simple connectors, used SMT technology, will be powered from the grid and provide an optional sensor. We feel that the customers needs are best addressed by providing light to only the areas that require it.
