Description
This page details the initial plans of what will happen at the beginning of Senior Design. It outlines what work needs to be completed first and then the work that needs to follow for the first few weeks of product development.
Preliminary Work Breakdown Structure
Displayed below is the initial work breakdown structure of the project.

Lead Student |
Arrange meeting with sponsor
Divide team into sub teams and coordinate meeting times. Identify additional resources required for project and begin obtaining commitments for resources. Obtain all team member contact information and distribute. Update 3 week plan. Ensure all deliverables are prepared and submitted to guide in timely fashion. Meet with each sub team and provide support where needed. Familiarize oneself with LED lighting technology and issues. |
Develop a draft of the entire project plan and
schedule.
Ensure all deliverables are prepared and submitted to guide in timely fashion. Benchmark alternative lighting systems. Order samples of LEDs based on recommendations from team. Record and publish results from benchmarking and needs evaluation |
Update the MSDI project plan.
Ensure all deliverables are prepared and submitted to guide in timely fashion. Generate concepts for improving system integration based on model and input from light panel sub team. Guide entire team in refining system concepts. Begin setting up concept review with customer and other technical consultants/faculty. |
ME Student 1 |
Research LED lighting technologies and issues.
Begin collecting information on existing LED or other light panels, with a focus on the structural design. Prepare a report for the team on different structural design classifications for the lighting panels/boxes with their pros and cons. Identify any specific needs such as equipment, software, or space that you may need for your tasks. |
Develop a list specific design specifications for the
panel box.
Benchmark lighting boxes. Research material options for box fabrication. Begin concept generation of light panel box and mounting options. |
Continue concept generation and present best concepts
to the team and refine based on team input.
Continue research material options. |
ME Student 2 |
Research LED lighting technologies and issues.
Research different options for the design of lights, which may include CAD add-on, freestanding light analysis software, analytical or other numerical models. Prepare a short presentation for the team describing options for tools to design the light panel. Research currently available LED panels on the market for area lighting. Identify any specific needs such as equipment, software, or space that you may need for your tasks. |
Define engineering specifications for the lighting
requirements.
Research scientific literature and web on alternative lighting systems with a focus on the lighting design. Begin brainstorming concepts for overall lighting system design in partnership with rest of the LED panel sub team. Decide on approach/tool for lighting design. Research specifications of available LEDs including range of pricing, spectrum, and lighting patterns. Propose LED samples for purchase and preliminary testing. |
Develop lighting design model and begin verifying
model.
Begin preliminary testing and familiarization with purchased LEDs. |
EE Student 1 |
Research LED lighting technologies and issues.
Prepare to give a report to team about advantages and
limitations of technology.
Research currently available LED panels on the market for area lighting. Identify any specific needs such as equipment, software, or space that you may need for your tasks. |
Benchmark alternative lighting systems with a focus
on the electrical circuit design and issues.
Begin brainstorming concepts for overall lighting system design in partnership with rest of the LED panel sub team. Identify key require system components for lighting panel circuit and begin to identify key design parameters. Examine the possible regulatory requirements on the circuit design. Report on key potential issues to team. Develop list of engineering specifications for the power and lighting circuit. Propose LED samples for purchase and preliminary testing. |
Continue concept generation. Prepare to report on key
concepts to entire team and refine concept from team
input.
Begin preliminary testing and familiarization with purchased LEDs. Begin more detailed circuit concept design. |
EE Student 2 |
Research "smart" lighting control technologies and
issues. Prepare to give a report to team about
different possible control options.
Identify any specific needs such as equipment, software, or space that you may need for your tasks. |
Benchmark alternative lighting control systems with a
focus on the electrical circuit design and issues.
Begin brainstorming concepts for overall lighting control system design in partnership with rest of the team. Identify key require system components for lighting panel circuit and begin to identify key design parameters. Develop list of engineering specifications for the control system. |
Continue control concept generation. Prepare to
report on key concepts to entire team and refine
concept from team input.
Assist EE1 with preliminary testing and circuit concept design. |
ISE Student 2 |
Review CAD tutorials and other necessary computer
programs
Review sustainability guidlines |
Focus on manufacturing, sustainability, user interface and environmental concern portions of benchmarking session | Look into user interface, sustainability and DFM options - prepare report |
