Project Overview

This team is responsible for designing and implementing a lighting system for an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV). The lighting system provides sufficient light for objects to be clearly identified by the ROV pilot in a variety of water conditions and depths. A lighting system appropriate for most possible conditions has been developed. LEDs are be used as the illumination source to reduce power requirements and heat generation. The lighting system is also incrementally dim-able and multi-spectrum lighting is available to the operator. Hardware and software has been designed to be as similar as possible to the modular, scalable land-based robots; the thruster units can also be controlled with the same software package. In addition, the team is responsible for the design and construction of enclosures which are suitable not only for the lighting system, but the thrusters designed by the thruster team (P08454); the lighting team has consulted with the thruster team and they have assisted as necessary. Furthermore, the enclosures are also mountable on the 10kg payload robot for land-based testing.
