Interview 4 - Background Interview

Interview 4 Agenda

The purpose this interview was to collect background information and get detailed information on the current and projected status of this year's MAV team. The following is a paraphrased summary of the interview.

Background Interview
Interviewer: Erik Bellandi
Team Lead: Michael Reeder (MAV 08 Project Team Lead)
Date: Friday 04 April 2008 4:00PM, Location: MAV Room
Erik:
I basically just wanted to get some back ground information.
Mike:
Right now one of the biggest things is we're waiting on the compiler for the Microcontroller. Adam our CE has been working on it a log and if you don't get the compiler to work then you won't be able to get the controller to work.
We also have our airfoil for our wing here and our tail is being made.
Erik:
As far as some of the analysis, what have you done and could I get some of it? Is it on edge?
Mike:
Cody was the man for that. He's not here but I know some of the equations he used are on edge but for most of the control areas there are a lot of rules of thumb like the ailerons should be about 25 to 35% of the chord. Ours are a little bigger but we're using flaperons.
Erik:
For the tail are you using flaps for elevators or moving the whole horizontal stabilizer?
Mike:
We're moving the whole surface and using a normal flap for a rudder.
If you guys are going to do the project next year you definitely want to look into funding early.
Erik:
Yeah, and I just got an offer for a co-op with Impact for the summer, so I might be able to talk to some people and get more funding.
Mike:
That'd be good. Try to contact Mike Koelemay. He's the one who got us the $1500 this year. That might be enough money for next year because O-Navi said they will upgrade the controller with the new technology so you shouldn't have to do much with the controller. But we still have to get the controller.
That's the biggest set-back we've had to deal with. We still haven't gotten the controller so we can't do any testing. We are hoping to do some testing next week so if you want to watch things and see what's going on we'll be in the field house from 1-3 next Friday. We have the servos and controllers powered separately just so we didn't risk frying the controller. We're just going to test with dummy weights for payload and the controller and see how it goes.
Erik:
Where do you think you guys will be by the end of year?
Mike:
Well we basically just want to get the pane flying and then if we get the controller we can see if we can get it to work.
Is there anything else you wanted to know or any other questions you had?
Erik:
I think that covers everything for me.
Mike:
Another thing you'll want to think about is you definitely want a couple of "Adams." Adam is our CE and has been really great but you'll definitely want a couple especially if you're focusing on the control system.
Erik:
Thanks.
Mike:
Yeah no problem, and if you want to know any more just stop on by any Friday.
