Preliminary Work Breakdown Structure

Notes from Faculty Guide

It is expected the project plan and work breakdown structure will be developed by the team. However, this is a rough guideline of what the expectations are on a week-by-week basis to help the team determine the appropriate tasks:
  1. Meet with system expert & validate needs
  2. Reverse engineering activities - need to probe all systems and understand what works and what doesn't. This activity coupled with the needs assessment activities will lead you to develop a detailed specification document that will be used to measure the degree of success of your project.
  3. In our case concept generation will have to be adapted slightly. The high-level architecture will have already been defined. So the concept selection will have to include a large laundry list of (1) activities that are needed to get the device working and different ways to achieve them; (2) the many possible improvement opportunities. Concept selection will entail reaching an agreement between the team and the faculty team as to which of the activities and opportunities defined above will be actually pursued for this project. Note that it is likely that concept generation activities may slip to week 3, but we'll have to make up the time in concept selection activities
  4. From here, the outline that was included in the syllabus is what we will follow. Please note the following two items. (1) Documentation in this case will not only include the documentation and analysis on the agreed upon activities and opportunities, but documenting the existing systems that will not be worked on. This may already exist, but it is the teams' responsibility to ensure that all of the relevant technical documentation is available one way or another. (2) Test plan development is going to be a critical aspect of this project. Since hardware already exists, it is highly recommended that the team take an approach that implements solutions in an incremental fashion, which means that test plans will need to be in place to verify the incremental implementations. Given the complexity of this device you will almost certainly fail if you wait until the end to test the entire solution

Hierarchical Work Breakdown

Deliverable 1: An inventory and status of the current sub-systems, including the needed supporting systems (e.g. 220 Voltage Drop)

Deliverable 2: A working EP development and transfer station.

Deliverable 3: Demonstrably improved device safety .

Deliverable 4: An improved user interface (this includes control and display functions)

Deliverable 5: Device documentation for use, maintenance and upgrade of the device (User & Lab Technician Manual)

David Schwartz Schedule meetings with project guide and customer along with project consultants. Extract customer needs from interview transcript and post to edge. Begin to develop preliminary work breakdown structure, 1 page project summary and two quarter schedule and milestones. Begin to extract customer needs and specifications from your question and answer session with consultants during Week 1. Finalize needs assessment, complete project summary, complete WBS and team roles and update two quarter schedule. Meet with Dr. Marhsall (ISE Professor) to learn about safety evaluation techniques. Begin to brainstorm at least three concepts for next weeks concept generation activity. Finish the inventory and status report, however more focus should be on the status of the present systems for this week. Document your findings. Begin to brainstorm at least three concepts for next weeks concept generation activity. Begin to evaluate the safety of the EDTS using the methodology provided Dr Marshall.
Ruth Gay Review all documents in the getting started and Week 1 section of myCourses. Formulate three questions for the project customer and guide that will help define the needs of the project relative to the project as a whole and to your specific discipline. Review the staffing requirements for your discipline and formulate three questions for the project consultants relative to the work description. Begin to extract customer needs and specifications from your question and answer session with consultants during Week 1. Working with the other MEs begin to do an inventory and status report of the EDTS mechanical systems. The mechanical inventory and status report will help refine the roles of the mechanical engineers and help with the target specifications. Document your findings. Begin to brainstorm at least three concepts for next weeks concept generation activity. Finish the inventory and status report, however more focus should be on the status of the present systems for this week. Document your findings.
Phillip Lopez Review all documents in the getting started and Week 1 section of myCourses.
