The P11017 Tactile Navigation Device will be a hands-free technology that can be used to navigate visually-impaired and blind people through high traffic areas where directions cannot be conveyed by voice commands, therefore, making tactile directions necessary to guide the user. The project is one of many within the Assistive Device family, but all the projects received their inspiration from the customer, Franklin LeGree from ABVI. ABVI is a company that employs a large share of visually-impaired and blind people in the local Rochester area. The project was proposed to RIT after issues involving visually-impaired/blind people and the Rochester bus system became apparent. Originally the idea started with how can the bus system become more accessable to the ABVI employees, but the RIT Design Project Management team responsible for the development of this series of projects expanded beyond just a device that can get you to a bus. The expansion encompassed the thought of what if a device that could navigate them anywhere was developed.

The overall objective of the P11017 team is to develop a concept to prototype into a working device by the end of the Spring Quarter in 2011. The team is looking to have two devices that will be presentable at the Imagine RIT festival and to possibly have these devices developed to the point where any visually-impaired or blind people that attend Imagine RIT may use them.

In addition to Franklin LeGree as a customer, the RIT community is firmly being grabbed as customers. The P11017 team has interviewed input from visually-impaired and blind students from RIT as primary customers for this project as it is a goal for the device to be developed and available to future RIT visually-impaired and blind students.
