Project Summary

Currently, students enrolled in fluids courses at RIT are expected to be able to learn the concepts about streamlines, vortices, and flow separation taught in class mostly through in class analytical examples and lectures. An opportunity for students to visualize flow would be extremely beneficial in increasing students’ comprehension of topics associated with open fluid flow.

The main objective is to engineer and develop a water table which will effectively demonstrate flow streamline behavior for the laminar flow regime over different object geometries at different angles of attack to enhance student comprehension. The water table would allow lecture time that is usually spent showing streamlines on a board or in the book to be augmented by the actual visualization of flow within the water table. Topics that could be taught include the basics of incompressible flow over a body using streamlines and flow separation. A one page summary of the project is summarized in the following link:

Customer Needs

The customer needs were assessed using a ranking system. We used a 1,2,3 ranking system were 1=least important, 2=important, and 3=very important. Using this ranking system all of the objectives were given values. This ranking system was determined through stakeholder interviews and continually feedback from stakeholders on objective ranking. Specifications

The engineering specifications that are needed to satisfy the customer needs are summarized in link "Engineering Specifications" below. The specifications are summarized in a table that will be used by the team to design against. The table is presented such that engineering metrics are specified with nominal min/max and ideal values in which each engineering metric they will be evaluated. Below the specifications worksheet is a house of quality, linking the customer needs to specific engineering specifications.

Team Norms & Values

Team values and norms were generated during week 2 of MSD I. The link below displays the team's values and norms and a corresponding rubric for evaluating each value and norm. The team's performance was documented several times throughout MSD I. These evaluations are also manifested in the link below.

A series of quality metrics were established by the team to identify how well the team met milestone targets. This is manifested in excel spreadsheet link below.

A project plan and track of the project is summarized in the "Project Track Schedule" link below. The tracking schedule identifies the main milestone objectives of the project with their estimated completion dates, actual completion dates, total hours to complete, person responsible for the task, and total hours to complete.
