The goal of P13624: Conductive Heat Transfer Demonstration Apparatus is to develop a functional, accurate laboratory device that will allow Chemical Engineering students to study core heat transfer topics in the Chemical Engineering Principles Lab. The design provides students with the opportunity to perform experiments, record data, and practice calculations related to conductive heat transfer in the context of a practical real life application. Apparatus design is focused on providing a modular, interactive, and flexible testing unit that generates one dimensional conductive heat transfer through a specimen, allows for the determination of thermal conductivity of multiple materials, and yields measurable data that demonstrates transient and steady state heat flow. Great importance is placed upon safety, accuracy, mobility, precision, longevity, and ease of use of the apparatus such that it will be able to be effectively utilized by RIT’s Chemical Engineering department in future lab courses.
