The Metropolitan Museum of Art's imaging department has a need to capture large works of art using a series of tiled digital images. The museum is currently in possession of a ceiling-mounted camera rig which can image large works. The limitation of this system is that it can only capture art placed on the ground below it. While this system is effective for movable works, there is a need to capture larger, permanent installations. To satisfy this need, a portable rig capable of imaging permanently installed wall-mounted work must be created.

An optimal prototype would be able to position a camera smoothly and accurately to capture a series of images of the work and then tile the images into a single composite. This design would also be very simple to use, require minimal maintenance, and work consistently with little job to job configuration. A high priority of the final prototype will be an aesthetically appealing design.
