Project Summary

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Space Exploration research group (SPEX) is developing the foundation to launch a CubeSat into space. CubeSats require rigorous testing before being launched into space to ensure the best possible chance of mission success. One of the key testing areas is with the Attitude Determination Control System (ADCS) of the CubeSat. This system allows a CubeSat to orient itself while in orbit. Currently, there is no ADCS testing apparatus on the RIT campus. The goal of this project is to create an environment suitable for ADCS testing at RIT. The apparatus should be able to provide between +1/-1 Gauss of the desired magnetic field in all 3 axes. It also should be able to accommodate a 1U (10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm) CubeSat, as well as be collapsible for storage when not in use.
