Lessons Learned
- Keep in constant contact with main stakeholder
- Avoid getting constructive feedback from too many different people
- Make sure that all team members always know what’s going on
- If time and budget allows, purchase test parts prior to finalizing design
- Double-check orders before being submitted to avoid errors
- Assess that orders came in correctly as soon as they arrive
- Outsource time-consuming and complicated machining
- Plan ample time to fix problems that will arise
- Be careful to rely on anyone other than team members/team guide, if they aren’t responsible for the project then it won’t be their priority
- Utilize existing materials on MSD floor or in machine shop and check if customer may have the needed parts prior to purchasing basic parts like bolts and scrap material
- Order extra parts, such as screws or wire connectors, to avoid being short later
- Practice design reviews with guide prior to presentation for customer
- Start all design reviews with objectives to maintain focus
- Get all agreements in writing
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help
- Look at previous teams’ documentation and EDGE page as a guide
- Always plan extra time in schedule to account for problems
