Preliminary Detailed Design

Team Vision for Preliminary Detailed Design PhaseFor the preliminary detailed design phase, the team planned on getting accurate costs for the different subsystems (sorting, shredding, baling) and working on developing a material handling system. To do this, the team worked with a contact from UNTHA and a resource from the business college.
Notes from the conference call with UNTHA can be found here.
Reaching out to these SMEs (Subject Matter Experts), however, resulted in the conclusion that the team was missing a critical piece of information-a market. It became clear to the team that a scope change was needed to the project to include a market. This is why the preliminary detailed design phase was split into two parts: the first was a scope change meeting and the second was a cost breakdown tool meeting to get guidance from Goodwill of the Finger Lakes before moving forward with the detailed design.
Scope Change Review
The team developed three options to present to Goodwill of the Finger Lakes for moving forward in the project.
- Choosing three final products for the system to manufacture
- Choose one final product for the system to manufacture
- Stop researching the process at shredding (ignoring additional processes, baling, and shipping)
The material presented during the Week 12 Scope Change Review with Goodwill of the Finger Lakes can be found in PowerPoint form here.
Both the team and Goodwill of the Finger Lakes decided on focusing on thermal insulation as the system’s final product.
Subsequent notes from the Scope Change Review can be found here.
Cost Breakdown Tool Review
In addition to speaking with a SME in the business college, the team had a brief “Cost Accounting 101” course with its guide, John Kaemmerlen. This was to help create a more comprehensive cost breakdown tool.
Notes from the brief cost accounting course can be found here.
With these inputs, the team was able to develop a Cost Breakdown Tool to present to the customer for feedback.
- Notes from the review can be found here.
Team Vision for Detailed Design Review
- Completing research on the additional subsystems needed to manufacture thermal insulation
- Developing a tentative material handling system
- Improving cost breakdown tool
