This project focused on designing a tablet carrying-case to help users with nonverbal Autism coupled with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and gross motor skill difficulties. Tablets are often used for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) with the help of type-to-speech and picture-to-speech applications. These apps are a less expensive alternative to traditional AAC devices and, therefore, need to be accessible to all potential users. Additionally, by utilizing mainstream technology for an assistive communication purpose,the tablet will be a more inclusive alternative for users and potentially assist in social interactions. By creating this case, the goal was to allow individuals, with not only Autism but with other physical limitations, be present in group conversations and on social media and, in turn, allow for more independence.
The objective of this project was to design a sensory-friendly, portable, and durable device with an emphasis on supporting the sensory and gross motor skill needs of the user. One of the main goals for this tablet case was for it to be completely manually operated with limited number of moving parts to avoid breakage and choking hazards. The main focus areas for this project included design for special needs children, rapid prototyping, 3D modeling, and 3D printing.
