Team Vision for Problem Definition Phase

This project is one component that will eventually be combined with other pieces to create a fully functioning soft inflatable walking robot. Our team is developing the walking component of the envisioned soft robot. The project falls under Research & Development Engineering and as a result has very few customer requirements.

Project Summary

Soft robots are made up of flexible components that change shape when subjected to a change in pressure. These robots are advantageous over rigid robots because they can tolerate deformation, which makes them ideal to complete dynamic tasks in various environments. Currently, soft robots are difficult to control as a result of their soft structures. This makes implementation into real world applications difficult.

The goal of this project is to create a walking inflatable robot that is bipedal or quadrupedal. The robot should be able to be inflated, to walk in a straight line, and then to be deflated on command via remote control. The end result should yield a functional prototype that builds upon previous “air muscle” technology from the soft robotic hand in P16227.
