Project Summary

Athletes are constantly striving to improve their own performance in high intensity sports. A device that simulates the projectile motion of a baseball or similar high velocity object can be a useful training tool. The Light Rail will be a flexible track on which LED lights simulate the movement of a pitched ball and act as a timing device for training athletes. The Light Rail will be a cost-effective product that provides a system which allows the player to simulate a variety of speeds to simulate the variability experience in a game. The accuracy at which the athlete stops the projectile is measured and displayed within milliseconds.

The Light Rail will be used to test human visual acuity, hand-eye coordination, and anticipation. The subject will swing a bat or press a button in response to a light moving down a fixed track. The swing or button press will cause the light to stop. The reaction time will be determined based on the distance from the goal position at which the light was stopped. A digital readout will report the results of the test to the user.

The goal of this project is to deliver a working model of a reaction time testing machine. The device needs to be fixed and accurate enough to deliver results meaningful to the athlete. All intellectual property will be given to the sponsor.
