Project Summary Project Information

The Rochester-based organization Haiti Outreach: Pwoje Espwa (H.O.P.E.) coordinates mobile clinics in remote areas of Haiti that provide residents with laboratory services. The isolation and lack of electricity greatly hinders the mobile clinic's ability to conduct laboratory tests, particularly through centrifugation. The medical centrifuge is a device that uses centripetal force to separate heterogeneous solutions. A working model produced by RIT students in 2015 satisfies most of the lab requirements but does not satisfy the hematocrit protocol.

The purpose of this project is to find solutions for last year's centrifuge design flaws and to create a new design that is able to satisfy the hematocrit protocols. The new design will improve issues concerning the centrifuge weight, aerodynamics and ergonomic concerns. The result will be an easy-to-use and lightweight centrifuge that will be able to effectively assist the H.O.P.E mobile clinics and the citizens of Haiti.
