Team Vision for System Level Demo with Customer

Our team was successfully able to build the system on the site, despite some last minute adjustments/changes and some budget issues. We included sensors that monitor temperatures and provide real time data on it. We also showed our final system to the customers and showed them how to use the datalogging, electrical, and mechanical systems.

Early Results Summary

After installing the system, we were able to gather a couple of days worth of data to test the effectiveness of the system and make any changes that are necessary to maintain the system. Listed below is a summary of the data collected to this point:

Maximum Temps

Minimum Temps

As expected the maximum temps of both the greenhouse and the compost pile occurred in the middle of the day, while the minimum temps occurred overnight. The compost pile was trending downwards when it reached the minimum temperature, so an adjustment was made to preserve the pile.

Decisions

The decision was made to lower the fan and pump cycles, and run them more infrequently to maintain the pile temperature without drawing too much air out of it. In addition, after speaking to the customers, it was decided to just keep the greenhouse slightly above freezing until around February, when they plan to actually plant the crops.

Plans for next phase

For the final phase of the project, we plan to successfully hand off the project and finalize the technical report. We want to make it so that the customer is able to maintain our system throughout the duration of the winter, as was our goal.
