Team Vision for Problem Definition Phase

To obtain a better understanding of the project assigned to team P17453, the team planned to obtain a better understanding of the project and the expectations for the deliverables from Dr. Kolodziej. The team conducted a customer interview to better understand the shortfalls of the current compressor system and discuss customer requirements in order to develop a list of engineering requirements. The team received a demonstration of the compressor to better understand the system that will be simulated. A schedule was developed with the help of Bill Nowak so the team will be able to meet Dr. Kolodziej’s expectations.

Project Summary

The objective of this project is to develop a poppet valve testing machine that will simulate the compression cycle of the Dresser-Rand ESH-1 compressor. This machine will allow a quick and easy way to test the effect of poppet valve failure at the discharge side of the compressor. The test rig will allow for rapid testing of the poppet valves found in the Full Scale compressor. Currently disassembling and reassembling the poppet valve assembly can take 30 minutes and allowing the compressor to be cool enough to touch takes even more time.

The goal of this project is to design a poppet valve testing bench that will simulate the compressor cycle on a smaller scale. The test rig will minimize the downtime between tests to less than 10 minutes without the same heat generated. The final design should be portable, easy to use and able to simulate the compressive cycle in the full size version.

Project Goals and Key Deliverables

The customer can expect a fully functional test rig, able to replicate the same pressure vs time curves of the full size compressor. The test rig will be small enough to be able to be moved if need be. Schematics and a technical paper will be written in order to show the validity of our design and the process we took to get the end product.
