Team Vision for Preliminary Detailed Design PhaseWhat did we plan to do during this phase?
- Re-define the target market
- Prototype concept ideas to get all team members on the same page
- Decide upon one design concept for the entire system
- Define test plans for the next phase
- Prove feasibility of design with calculations
We accomplished all planned steps in this phase except completing all calculations. Our team now agrees on a single concept design. Performing the prototyping exercise proved to be quite beneficial in refining our component ideas.

We looked at the different possible costs for implementing a handicap bathroom in the public and private situations. From our research and talking with Chris, it was established that the amount of money spent on private bathrooms varies by disability and many people are willing to spend large amounts in order to guarantee daily comfort. This means that most people are comfortbale with their current private bathroom, but many people still have issues with the public restrooms. For this reason, we are choosing to focus on designing a product which can be marketed to the facilities with public restrooms. Current ADA bathrooms cost around $750 when adding to an existing stall. This gives us a good idea of how much our target market is willing to spend on such a product.
Above are pictures of models that our group created to visualize some of the concepts we are planning on implementing. This helped us to understand how we could combine support rods and a seat lifting mechanism into one final product.

Test PlansWe have decided to complete component testing in the next phase. The different components we will test are:
- Seat (Static load testing and lift testing)
- Grab bars (Load testing)
- Arm rests (Load testing)
- Frame (Load testing and size feasibility)
Our complete test plans can be found here.

Plans for next phase
Below is our plan for the next phase. We have plans to perform component testing on the 5 main subsections: frame, transfer supports, arm rests, seat, and lifting mechanism. Once we finalize our design, we want to place out first material order before the end of MSD 1.
