Functional Decomposition

Our ultimate goal is to satisfy the parent while their baby is using our product. Our functional decomposition is categorized into three levels (1, 2, & 3). As you can see in the image below, when you move down the diagram, the actions explain HOW we will complete our goal, and when you move up the diagram, the actions explain WHY we are doing so.

Concept Development & Morphological Chart

The Morphological Chart below lists sub-functions of our product and presents possible solutions for each sub-function. The objective is to try to brainstorm all possible solutions for each sub-function, create overall solutions using different combinations of sub-function solutions, then compare the overall solutions in a Pugh Chart. (The numbers listed in parentheses refer to the solution numbers listed below.)

After reviewing possible solutions through the morphological chart and pugh charts, our primary solution we plan to pursue is: Solution 1

Concept Selection

The Pugh Charts below compare essential criteria to possible solutions. The solutions are compared to the datum, where a (+) indicates an upgrade, a (-) represents a downgrade, and an (S) designates neither an upgrade or downgrade.
Analyzing Pugh Chart A: The Jumperoo by Fisher-Price is being compared to system-level solutions implemented by the team. Solutions (1) and (2) illustrate many improvements, while Solution (3) does not.
Analyzing Pugh Chart B: Solution (2) and (3) are being compared to Solution (1) to determine if Solution (1) is the best solution. As seen in the table, Solution (2) provides some upgrades, while Solution (3) downgrades in most categories.
Analyzing Pugh Chart C: Pugh Chart C was designed AFTER a survey was conducted by 50 customers (parents). Solution (4) is the solution that the consumers voted on. Overall, Solution (4) did not differ from Solution (1) in many ways.
Overall: After conducting a survey, Solution (4) was created and compared to solution (1). After many considerations, Solution (1) is the best overall solution to move towards in the Preliminary Design stage.
