Planning & Execution

Table of Contents

Your website should document your journey through MSD, so include work-in-progress as well as latest results. Use pdf's for display whenever possible so that information is easily viewable without the need to download files and open applications. (Your EDGE file repository should still contain original editable files).

Content related to this node should go in the Project Management directory. Several templates have been posted there for your reference.

All template text and instructions must be removed prior to the Week 3 Problem Definition Review

Intellectual Property Considerations

Is your team considering filing for a provisional or non-provisional patent? Does your project's financial support carry any IP requirements? Are there select elements of your project that your customer has required that you keep confidential?

There is an excellent set of short videos for reference at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmNrnoyQ30KvvBuMJXaPjdFjq-Jm6ghqE

Team Setup

Purpose

  1. Facilitate team coordination and identify lacking capabilities.
  2. Establish good practice of structured, coordinated documentation.

Instructions

  1. Instructions and EXAMPLE must be deleted before the Problem Definition Review.
  2. The team should arrive at consensus on a leader.
  3. Assign responsibility for other important non-design roles and functions, such as facilitator, purchasing, EDGE help, customer PIC, etc. One member should take ownership of this document and ensure it is completed and loaded on EDGE.
  4. Capture relevant skills and experiences of each team member.
  5. Considering the purpose, the team should anticipate potential failure modes associated with construction and use of this document.

MSD- Interview Notes 9/5/17

Main Branch: LORD Corp. Oil & Gas

Background: Trade show, display TVA, approachable booth, informative display

TVA: Single degree: Mass on spring. Match natural frequency to reduce vibration. Resonant system flipped 180 degrees to cancel vibration. Equal and opposite. .5-10% of primary mass Solve for stiffness, k of spring/rubber needed. Transmissibility curve - emailed powerpoint. TVA has specific frequencies-not variable. Design TVA ourselves. LORD provide rubber “spring” (elastomer compound), we create the “mass”

Display: Two systems side by side. Computer display measured graphs. Interactive button, touchscreen. One graph for common one graph for Engineer. Large tolerance for measured inputs. “Loose”. Show LORD technology. Include Engineering lingo, units, equations? Show difference in vibration reduction

Resources: LORD provide laptop for display, pedestal, rubber elastomer/ rubber mount. Request type. If in stock can ship immediately. If not in stock will take a few weeks. LORD can help with calculations of proprietary rubber material properties.

Tradeshow: Dynamic display, motion, unusual video, action. QR code? Perhaps show examples large systems under vibration ex swinging bridge, buildings, powerlines. Attract audience even without them understanding the product. Once they’re there have deeper info available Shipping case, truck, UPS, luggage. Stored in Houston Texas. Set up at site, sent when needed. LORD will provide pedestal. Would prefer some sort of packaging

Operator skillset: Range backgrounds in ME,CE,EE or business. Aim for MECE background knowledge to repair unit. Worse case scenario normal salesperson. Must design so anyone can repair unit.

Budget: Zach manages ~4k Design efficient to save money

Contact: Biweekly meetings with Keith Thursday 2:30pm reserve classroom each week. Keep in contact with LORD. Same call in number 91-(xxxxx). Webconference if need to share screen. Keep them in the loop and up to speed. Don’t wait for meetings to ask questions, contact Keith when they arise. Emails to Keith combine with team effort and set due date for Keith to respond Zach manager & Zach new guy also involved if Keith is unavailable They get busy- pester if need be

Keith to deliver: Mount info Tradeshow Training Noise limit Code Recommendation (if any)

Team to deliver: Report Thursday Possible coding language list. Matlab 16b, Arduino. Packaging for vibrating system unit, not show stopper

Gary: Ensure disconnected from phone Most damage from packing and unpacking. Make simple. Footprint, total weight of system Visit local trade show, interview salesperson, target market, have certain info for certain industries, Laptop spec EE requirements Previous LORD team 17301, simulate oil & gas facility

Gary’s Suggested Questions: Time given to grab attention of customer? Trade shows coming up that team can/should attend? Should we incorporate swappable isolators based on target market? Contact info for trade show expert?

  1. Skills - team and guides.
  2. Expertise - SMEs.

Outputs and Destination

Document of team capabilities and resources that can be accessed later.

Team Values and Norms

Purpose

Define the team's expectations of its members and used as the basis for peer reviews.

Instructions

  1. Instructions and EXAMPLE must be deleted before the Problem Definition Review.
  2. Identify an owner for this document.
  3. Team must identify and define their Values and Norms
  4. Define escalation process for addressing issues.
  5. Considering the purpose, the team should anticipate potential failure modes associated with construction and use of this document.

Project Plans & Schedules

Purpose

Ensure timely delivery of all required work products, identify prerequisite tasks with owners, ensure special resource needs are met.

Instructions

  1. Instructions and EXAMPLE must be deleted before the Problem Definition Review.
  2. Identify an owner for this document.
  3. This document will be inspected at all project reviews.
  4. MSD I & II: Work breakdown structure should be used to construct Gantt charts, schedule, etc. Each revision is numbered and dated.
  5. Each milestone/Project Review is enabled by a listing of all of the required prerequisite deliverables. These enablers each have owners, due dates and a common understanding of how good is "good enough" for each deliverable.
  6. Considering the purpose, the team should anticipate potential failure modes associated with construction and use of this document.
