Project Summary

A "k-mirror" assembly is several mirrors connected to a rotating mount that will be servo controlled by the KP12M telescope control software, which synchronizes the angle of rotation of the image from the telescope on the detector of arrays. This assembly will rotate the resulting image through three reflections. Current astronomical cameras are designed in approximately square format with thousands or millions of pixels. This assembly will instead use lines of detectors to map the sky.

The goals of this project are to develop a "k-mirror" assembly that holds several ~50 cm diameter mirrors at desired locations in three-dimensional space, rotate the mirror assembly about a specified axis using active control, and ensure the mirror rotates at the correct speed and angle to keep a line of constant declination aligned with the detectors in the instrument. The expected end result is a k-mirror assembly that has been designed, fabricated, and tested to meet the optical system requirements. The resulting design and prototype needs to be the accepted standard at the prescribed wavelengths, contained by the received cabin mounted on the telescope, couple the input optical beam precisely, not over rotate to avoid conflicts in the cabin, and have a manual lockout system for personnel to abort motion for any reason.
