The team used this time to complete the required machining and assembly of the system. Once the machine was built, the team ran some tests to observe functionality and understand the dynamics of the components working together.

The electrical components of the system were arranged on the side of the frame to facilitate operation. Once the final design is finished, all wiring will be contained in a single box attached to the side of the frame.

Test Results Summary

Integrated Heating Test

Using a thermal imaging camera, the heat transfer throughout the barrel will be assessed in order to determine what temperatures will need to be generated to melt the plastic at the desired levels.

Material Extrusion Test

The first melting test involved pouring new plastic pellets into the barrel without the nozzle on. The consistency of the materials was thick, which can be explained by the relatively low temperature we were using. The barrel was set at 120 degrees Celsius, while we will ideally want to melt it at 200 degrees Celsius.
