Team Vision for Preliminary Detailed Design Phase
The team’s main focus of this phase was the design and detailing of solutions to:- Design of the game
- Rhythm game note generation
- Difficulty management
- Determining logging information to record
- Handling input from different devices
- Test Plans
For the Preliminary Design Review, we planned to further work on our team dynamics but we also wanted to further dig into each of the individual topics of our design (that is, all of the smaller subsystems delegated to detailed design), create detailed analysis of the individual components specific to our selected game type and establish a running timeline of expected deadlines for functionality of certain component or system designs.
The test subsystems were delegated to the CEs on the team and the details of the game's design and implementation were delegated to the BMEs of the team. We have also assigned two members of the team to be responsible for any required Human Subjects Research.
Accomplished:
- Basic Design of game
- Options available and compared for note generation
- Options available and compared for various types of information for logging
- Investigation and Establishment of the inputs from different devices our system will need to handle
- Analysis of types of logging information to record

Risk Assessment
We have covered our PT process needs via communication with Matthew (the PT mostly takes place in the lab at their facility) and the current VR training system was explained as well, however we would still like to hash out how tasks are currently added to the system.
To ensure we are accounting for the maximal patient benefit, it is of the utmost importance that we be informed on the current patient recovery / training process so as to best inform the required therapeutic / training elements to include in the game. This is considered a high priority risk with a dependence on our client to get us this information. In the event of inability to acquire this information, we will endeavor to communicate with nearby amputee centers regarding typical recovery processes and lifetimes. We are considering reaching out to people at these facilities regardless but this has not be finalized. Our living risk management document can be found here: LINK

Plans for next phase
As a Team
For our next review, we would like all game and server communication subsystems to have been established (no more moving goal posts), all test systems to have a complete bill of materials and selected concept, and a general timeline of tasks to be completed in a more presentable state. We are currently pointing and planning out the deliverables required to be finished in time for the final Detailed Design Review in three weeks. Since our team has split into two groups (one working on the design of the game itself and the other working on the mechanical arm), we have compiled a list of tasks to be executed by each group before the day of the final Design Review.List of Deliverables Organized by Subteam (G - Game Design Team, H - Handy Team)
- Server Design and Data Structuring Implementation (G / H)
- Software breakdown diagram (G)
- Game Functionality (G)
- Translator (H)
- Server (G / H)
- Final Game Concept selection (G)
- Sketches of Game Screens (G)
- Finalized Rough Bill of Materials for Hand (H)
- Output Specifications of the Arm Device (H)
