Students with a physical disability are twice as likely to be inactive during the week, which not only limits their physical activity, but also reduces these students’ opportunity to develop important social and leadership skills. The OvercomerTM is a form of assistive technology that helps individuals who have physical disabilities become more active in physical and social activities from their wheelchair, walker, or stander. The OvercomerTM intends to help users interact, socialize, and enjoy their time being active. Current prototypes of the OvercomerTM include both lower and upper extremity attachments, which include help for users to play hockey, baseball, and soccer. These prototypes can be improved on to becomes more reliable and stronger, as well as being more easily manufactured at an affordable price. There are currently no comparable products on the market.

The goal of this project is to further help develop the OvercomerTM for users to be able to throw and catch a ball with ease and excitement while making the product more adjustable to multiple mobile aids. It should also be easy to lift and attach the device and not interfere with the mobile aids it is being attached to. In addition to being user-friendly, The OvercomerTM needs to be able to be transported or stored conveniently. The end product needs to have low manufacturing costs with a goal market price of $500-$1200.
