FAR OUT Rocketry is a multi-university team working on a liquid bipropellant rocket. In the years past, FAR OUT Rocketry has had members from Rochester Institute of Technology, Georgia Tech, Northeastern University, University of Central Florida, and Virginia Tech. This project, which our RIT MSD team is bringing to structural completion, began in 2017 with the FAR OUT Rocketry team’s entry in the FAR-MARS competition.
The FAR-MARS competition challenges student teams to design, build, and fly a bipropellant liquid rocket with the capacity to reach an altitude as close to 45,000ft while carrying a 2.2lb payload. This past year, several RIT Computer Engineering students completed the avionics design portion for their senior design project. However, tank manufacturing complications prevented the team from competing in the 2018 competition. This year, members from Northeastern University will be improving the engine design and completing integration. The RIT MSD team will be working on the structural design and analysis for an initial launch in May 2019 with aspirations to be part of competitions in the future.
