Structure Selection Process

Feasibility: Prototyping, Analysis, Simulation

Feasibility analysis was done to compare potential materials for the structure. For this analysis, it was assumed all materials would have the strength to support the weight limit of the payload. Therefore, the criteria evaluated was weight of the potential structure materials. The area used for this analysis was determined by the solar panel size.Aluminum was found to be the heaviest option and this weight was used as a conservative estimate in the teams Power-Weight Calculations.

A power and weight budget table was made to estimate the total weight of the system and all of the components. This table includes all electronics, the BioX Cells and estimated values for the system structure.

Concept Development and Morphological Chart

Based on the structure functional decomposition and the basic feasibility done, a morphological chart was constructed. This chart includes potential options to address each of the structures sub functions.

By using the morphological chart, three concepts were developed. These concepts include a foam structure, a structure utilizing a metal sheet to suspend the payload, and a metal frame to enclose all of the components.

Concept Selection

A pugh matrix was used to select the concept moving forward. The concepts were evaluated based on feasibility, robustness, weight, cost and manufacturability. Because foam has been used in past years projects, the foam concept was used as the initial datum. Based on robustness and manufacturability, the sheet metal concept had the best evaluation and will be the concept used moving forward. As this design is refined and prototyping is done it is possible that this concept can use traits of the other concepts to improve its function.
