Team Vision for System-Level Design PhaseDuring the Systems Design phase, our main goal was to initiate the design process by brainstorming potential ideas. In addition to this, we wanted to start “getting our hands dirty” by analyzing the current system through the completion of time studies and spending time watching both customers and employees interact with the current state. By doing this, we would be able to collect certain metrics that we would then be able to take to other food pantry facilities and see how their system compares to RIT FoodShare’s, as well as identify pain-points and areas for improvement. The main purpose of this phase was to really begin to understand how the system currently works and identify/develop ideas that would help improve the system to ultimately achieve the customer and engineering requirements developed in the Problem Definition phase.
We were able to accomplish this through the creation of various charts such as a functional decomposition, which shows the breakdown of how the different people interact with the system, a benchmarking table, which allowed us to compare RIT FoodShare’s performance to that of the Perinton Food Shelf, and a concept development chart, which was a brainstorming tool that allowed us to be able to break down the system into its separate components and think of different ways each of those tasks could be completed. From this concept development chart, we created a morphological chart, which was a visual way to see all the different ideas we thought of as to how the new system could potentially work. This phase was very helpful to us in that we were all able to gain a further understanding of the current state, as well as beginning to document ideas that could potentially be implemented in the future system.
Functional DecompositionWe decided to do multiple functional decompositions, each from the perspective of one of the primary stakeholder groups. Each of these stakeholders experience the FoodShare differently, so we felt this would be the best way for us to discover process improvement opportunities from each of their perspectives.
