The Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ABVI) is a not-for-profit organization that is “ dedicated to carrying out its mission to prepare and empower people who are blind or visually impaired to be self-sufficient and contribute to their families and communities” (ABVI mission statement). In order to accomplish their mission, ABVI provides employment opportunities for blind and visually impaired workers. Many of these job opportunities are part of ABVI businesses that manufacture products for sale. These businesses generate revenue that is used to fund other ABVI projects such as accessibility technology and vision rehabilitation.
ABVI wants to expand their softgoods manufacturing business. Currently, workers use specialized sewing machines to create high quality garments, particularly for the United States military. Due to the fact that they pay United States labor costs, ABVI works to produce low quantity, high quality products that can compete in specialized markets. They would like to expand their softgoods business by creating additional products for sale in the United States, and eventually globally. These new products should fill a niche in which they can be competitive.
ABVI would also like to start a textile processing business. The goal would be to shred textiles donated to Goodwill and transform it into a product. These textiles are clothing items that Goodwill was unable to resell. ABVI would like to maximize the revenue generated by the textile goods they obtain from Goodwill. An ideal way to do this would be to process and re-purpose the textiles in house, rather then selling them to an outside party at a reduced rate.
